Lewis - Gravel Cycling - Easy

A tranquil pedal

This ride features quiet country roads, fields, a famous river, forests and the location of historic and cultural prominence.

How to get there

This ride begins across the road from the Elizabethtown-Lewis Emergency Squad facility, which is located 2.5 miles north of Elizabethtown on New York State Route 9. Parking is best 200 feet off the state highway on Steel Woods Road, where the electric utility right of way crosses Steel Woods Road.  (Coordinates: 44.246619, -73.566599)

Iron to Iron

This wonderfully scenic route will go by some of the most pivotal elements of the Industrial Revolution, explained by the two museums along the route. Mostly paved, cross bike recommended. Very hilly remote roads with limited services and some logging truck traffic. Museums, swimming, services in Port Henry.

26.1 miles - Port Henry and Ironville. Map and turn-by-turn directions on the PDF, and also at the Lake Champlain Bikeways website.

Osprey Way Loop

With the mountains as your backdrop, ride by lakes and meadows on this scenic loop. Gain a "bird's eye view" from it's many vantage points, and see if you can spot the osprey's nest along the trail.

How to get there

Coming from the south, turn off County Route 9 towards the east, onto Lake Road. At the railroad tracks, turn left onto Burdick Road. Pick up Route 9 again, turn left, and follow it south back to complete the loop.

Ensign Pond Road

This lovely route is also a symbol of friendship: look for the stone with an image of the two shaking hands etched in it. The North Hudson Pine Ridge Cemetery is the resting place of a number of War of 1812 soldiers.

Cycling

Access through the Hammond Pond Wilderness, with trails to Trout Pond, Round Pond Trail, East Mill Flow, Challis Pond Trail, Moose Mountain Pond, and Bass Lake.

Acres of Apples

Travel through five different apple orchards.
