In depth

An historic Adirondack shipbuilding port, the Town of Essex boasts one of the most intact collections of Federal and Greek Revival architecture in rural America. Founded in the 18th century, the entire hamlet was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Appealing boutiques, a wellness center, art galleries, and a 200-year-old, superbly renovated inn are just a few of the places to explore along the main street.

Here you can hop aboard a Lake Champlain Transportation Company ferry for an “on the water experience,” grab a bite to eat overlooking the lake, or relax in Begg’s Park while watching graceful boat traffic upon the water.

With a strong history in agriculture, today this community has several CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture) that supply locally grown products to residents, visitors, and restaurants.

The Whallonsburg Grange hosts a wide variety of programs and entertainment, including the newly refurbished Whitcomb's Garage which features artisan shops and much more. Routine features are presented by the Champlain Valley Film Society. Performances by the Essex Theatre Company and diverse concerts can be enjoyed throughout the season.
