A Hell of a Place to Lose a Cow: Hitchhiking Across America

Author Tim Brookes: A Hell of a Place to Lose a Cow: Hitchhiking Across America

In the summer of 1973, Tim Brookes did what everyone did in those days: he hitchhiked around America. Twenty-five years later to the day, starting from exactly the same on-ramp on Interstate 80, he did what nobody was doing any more: he went back out on the road with his thumb out, this time as a National Geographic expedition to rediscover America, to rediscover hitchhiking, and to see if there was anything left of his 20-year-old self.
