This short trail can be completed quickly, but why would you want to rush through nature?

Getting there

From the intersection of Route 9N and Route 22 in Westport, follow Route 22. Continue for 0.5 mile and turn right on Lake Shore Road. Follow that for 4.5 miles to the trailhead on the right.

  • 0.7 mile, one way.

Hiking

This is a short spur trail that adds a bit of variety to a trail network, and it's also a good way to create a loop. The trail leaves the Lewis Bay Clearing Trail on the right 0.1 mile from the trailhead and feels like an old woods road. The path climbs slightly as it swings back to higher ground before returning to the Lewis Clearing Bay Trail, roughly 0.7 mile from the trailhead.

The Split Rock Wild Forest is known for having timber rattlesnakes, which can often be seen sunning themselves at lookouts and along the trail. Negative encounters with humans are not likely as these animals are easily spooked, but it is highly advisable to keep pets on a leash and to never approach or corner a timber rattlesnake. If you or your pet has been bitten, seek medical attention as quickly as possible.
