In depth

The Town of Chesterfield sits between the banks of the Ausable River and the shores of Lake Champlain. It is home to the village of Keeseville and the shoreline hamlets of Port Kent and Port Douglas.

Chesterfield is home to the amazing Poke-O-Moonshine mountain. There are two trail options to the summit, where a historic Adirondack fire tower await and expansive views of Lake Champlain and the High Peaks await. Be sure to watch for climbers on Poke-O's impressive cliff bands!

If you're into history, check out the gallery and rotating exhibits at Adirondack Architectural Heritage, the historic preservation organization for the Adirondacks. They're located downtown in a renovated horseshoe nail factory building — be sure to stop by and find out what's happening in the region. AARCH hosts many tours of historical buildings throughout the park.

Ausable Chasm is a little north of the village on state Route 9, and it's not to be missed. This natural wonder has been attracting visitors for more than 100 years. Visitors can explore the chasm year-round on miles of well-maintained trails. Raft or tube down the river in summer months and check out frozen waterfalls in the winter. Nearby, the North Star Underground Railroad Museum celebrates freedom while unveiling the involvement of the Champlain Line of the underground railroad.

Looking for a day trip? Rent bikes and ride them to the Wickham Marsh Wildlife Area for some fantastic bird watching.
