As the sun slants a little more to the South in late summer, we begin thinking about the change of the seasons and our fall events. Of course, there are still several summer events not to be missed. Here are some of the highlights for the next few weeks.

Get lost in the Corn Maze

Fort Ticonderoga still has a full schedule of historic events that are sure to both educate and entertain you. The Fort’s famous Heroic Corn Maze opened last weekend as well and will be open through mid-October. I’ve always been fascinated by how corn mazes are cut so precisely. HOW on Earth do they know where to go without seeing it from above as they’re doing it?  I’m sure a GPS is involved, though. Perhaps someone can fill you in when you visit the maze this year! If you are further enlightened than I on this curious subject, let me know. Visit our calendar page for corn maze hours throughout the rest of the summer and fall.  First Lady, Michelle Obama, even selected the Corn Maze as a part of her "Let's Move" campaign recently!

Comedy theatre

The Depot Theatre in Westport still has a couple weeks of performances. The last production of this season features Pete ’n’ Keely, a comedy set in a live 1968 NBC studio broadcast.  Don’t miss this last show. Insider tip: the seats at the Depot Theatre are the most comfortable reclining seats you’re likely to sit in at a theatre anywhere around. The seats are also kind of historic. They were originally installed in the long-ago closed Harbor Movie Theatre in Lake Placid and they couldn't have asked for a better second life than here at the Depot Theatre!

Learn about wild mushrooms

If you’d like to be more knowledgeable about wild mushrooms, we’ve got an event for you! “Three Views of Black Kettle Trail” is a two-hour guided foray into the intriguing world of mushroom foraging takes place on Tuesday, August 26th. Learn what is and what is not edible in the fungi world with co-founder of the Mushroom Forager, Ari Rockland-Miller. You must pre-register at the phone number listed for the event.

Float your (cardboard) boat

Of course, Labor Day wouldn’t be Labor Day in Westport without the Cardboard Boat Race at the Westport Marina. See if you can create a floatable rig out of cardboard and try to win the distinction of being the last “boat” floating. This event is great fun for kids and adults. There will be prizes involved and we hear there’s an award entitled, “The Titanic Award.” Hmmmm, guessing this might go to the first boat to sink, maybe?

Are you a home schooler?

An event I find really cool is Fort Ticonderoga’s Home School Day. If you’re a home schooler, this is a day set aside especially for you and your ‘students’. As more and more parents across the globe are home schooling, this event will be an interesting day to spend at the Fort taking part in a series of programs designed just for you. There’s more information on the calendar listing.

Our bountiful harvest

There are still Farmers' Markets in several Lake Champlain Region towns every week. Right now is the opportune time to pick up all those wonderful vegetables, crafts and more each week. Take home some of our finest Champlain Valley produce and get out the canning jars. Browse our calendar for all the Farmers' Market days and hours. For a great farm event, plan ahead to attend Taste of Local at the Adirondack History Center Museum on September 20th. This annual food festival kicks off Adirondack Harvest Week, celebrating our bountiful local farm harvests.
