Simply Crown Point

Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce blog by Katelyn Chevier

Crown Point is a small town set directly on the Adirondack Coast. There are an abundance of sights to be seen and treats to be eaten all throughout this warm and welcoming community. Activities can be simply categorized to make planning your visit as easy as 1-2-3!

Outdoors

Crown Point offers a wide range of outdoor activities, from hiking to camping to anything in between! Easy hiking and walking trails in Crown Point include Penfield Pond Trail, Old Ironville Road Trail, and the Champlain Bridge Trail, which all offer great sights and are suitable for all ages.

The Penfield Pond Trail is a free 1-mile round trip walking trail that follows the east shore of Penfield Pond overlooking the water. Close by this trail you can find the longer Old Ironville Road Trail which is 4.6 miles round trip in length. This pet friendly trail runs through a lovely forest.

If you crave to be in more of the “hustle and bustle,” the Lake Champlain Bridge Trail follows both sides of the Lake Champlain Bridge connecting New York and Vermont. At the top of the bridge you may be able to spot fishermen down below as they float by on the lake hoping for a big catch, or a family of geese swimming in a row. Clear, open views of the mountains can be seen from both sides. On your way to the Vermont side, looking to the right, is an excellent photo opportunity of the Champlain Memorial Lighthouse. If you’re interested in seeing the lighthouse close up, visitors can enter the Crown Point Campground to get a better look.

The Crown Point Campground overlooks Lake Champlain and offers 66 campsites, boating from an on-site boat launch, and fishing.

Shopping and dining

Don’t forget to pack your shopping shoes when you visit Crown Point! A great place to start is Gunnison Lakeshore Orchards Olde Farmhouse Bakery & Gifts. The bakery counter offers a delicious variety of fresh baked treats like pies, bread, cookies, and their famous cider donuts. Making your way into the gift shop, you can find a charming collection of locally crafted foods and products.

The next stop for Crown Point Shopping is Tromblee’s Greenhouse and Gift Shop. Tromblee’s boasts the prettiest flowers and shrubbery in town! The plants are in impeccable shape and ready to be transferred to your garden. The shop inside is filled wall-to-wall with antiques, collectibles, farmhouse décor, and more. It's a feast for the eyes!

A great spot for lunch or to unwind with a drink for dinner is The Crab Shack at Maple Ridge Park. In addition to the 50-site campground, Maple Ridge Park features The Crab Shack Snack Bar offering traditional American-style food with a great variety of seafood. Enjoy your summer night out on the deck with good friends and family.

History

A well preserved part of history in Crown Point is the Penfield Homestead Museum. An impressive array of one-of-a-kind artifacts are collected here and on display, showcasing why Ironville, a hamlet of Crown Point, is the “Birthplace of the Electrical Age.” Each room of this classically-styled house takes visitors back to a simpler time. Visitors can then step out back to the big barn where farming tools of days gone by reside. The Homestead Museum is a great place to learn about the area’s history as well as a glimpse of what everyday life looked like in the past!

To round out your historical experience, a trip to Crown Point is not complete without visiting the Crown Point State Historic Site. This site holds the ruins of two fortifications, from the colonial wars between the British and the French, overlooking gorgeous views of Lake Champlain and the Bridge.  The museum starts off the visit with a multimedia orientation and relics preserved from the ruins. Walk outside and turn the corner to see breathtaking views of the ruins. Imagination runs wild as you picture what life in these forts must have looked like!

Any way you look at it, the small town of Crown Point is simply a great place to visit. For up-to-date information about Crown Point's happenings, visit the events calendar or call 1-866-THE-LAKE. Find a great place to stay while visiting the Adirondack Coast.
