The Magic Triangle, composed of Clark, Cross, and Lakeshore Roads (which form a triangle) south of Essex, is a collection of woodlots and fields which attract birds throughout the year. Baltimore orioles, eastern kingbirds, great crested flycatchers, and a variety of warblers breed in the area, and red-bellied woodpeckers are present year round.

Wintering birds include a variety of raptors such as rough-legged hawk, red-tailed hawk, and northern harrier. Short-eared owls have occasionally been seen during evenings in fall and mild winters. The area can also be a good place for northern shrike in winter as well as wintering field birds such as tree sparrows and horned larks. Webb Royce Swamp, along Clark Road, can also be productive.
