Hiking in the Lake Champlain Region

Hit the trails

The Lake Champlain region offers a multitude of hiking options for the outdoor enthusiast and history buff alike. Take a leisurely historic walking tour through one of the area's eclectic lakeside communities or challenge yourself on one of the many area trails and enjoy unforgettable views – nature's variety in the area allows you to choose your own path.

If you're interested in enjoying the crisp autumn air, transforming foliage, and learning about the area's history, grab a guide and explore the historic town of Essex, featured on the National Register of Historic Places and one of the few remaining villages in America featuring intact pre-Civil War architecture. The La Chute River Trail may also pique your interest as you explore the natural and industrial milling history along the La Chute River near Fort Ticonderoga.

Looking for something a bit more vertical? Head up Split Rock Mountain – a 6.5-mile loop within the 3,700 acre Split Rock Mountain Wild Forest and part of the largest tract of underdeveloped and forested land along the New York State shoreline of Lake Champlain. One of the more difficult trails in the area is Hurricane Mountain, offering a 5.2 mile round trip hike with big rewards – the summit features 360-degree views of Lake Champlain and the High Peaks.

If you need assistance purchasing gear or are interested in hiring an expert to accompany and educate you on your hike, contact a Lake Champlain licensed guide service – they will be more than willing to aid you as you climb your way toward the mountaintop.
