Soundwaves is pleased to present the 2016 summer concert series at Ballard Park in Westport, NY. North Country resident and veteran Jazz trumpeter Taylor Haskins and his wife Catherine founded Soundwaves in 2014 when they accepted the role as volunteer organizers of the Westport Community Concert Series.
This summer Taylor has curated a program of 6 performances by internationally renowned artists that is musically on par with the best summer festivals. Despite Taylor's jazz background, this summer he will bring to the stage diverse styles and instrumentation.
The 2016 summer series begins July 7th at 7:30 and continues every Thursday night through August 11th on the hillside amphitheater overlooking Lake Champlain, known as the Ballard Park Performance Pavilion. Bring a blanket and/or lawn chairs and a picnic. The rain site is across Main Street/Route 22 in the warm acoustics of the historic chapel of the Westport Heritage House.
Opening this summer’s concert series will be Chilean born vocalist & guitarist Camila Meza, who will dazzle audiences not only with her exquisitely crafted multi-lingual songs, but also with her fluid, modern approach to the guitar. On July 14th, Brooklyn & New Orleans based singer-songwriter, Richard Julian, deemed by Randy Newman as “One of the best songwriters and record makers I’ve heard in a very long time” will perform his songs, which expertly blend the sardonic and the bittersweet. The following Thursday, we’ll bring Vermont's most in demand bassist, Robinson Morse, to present his eclectic blend of instrumental soul with his 10-piece aggregation he calls Sound of Mind. On July 28th Soundwaves presents The Snaz, whose 2015 release Running Away from Home, was deemed by the Burlington Free Press “The year’s most-exciting album...from four Brattleboro teens who know how to craft a pop song with a boost of punk energy”. On August 4th, Sarah Neufeld, a member of the Canadian indie-rock band Arcade Fire, will be presenting music from her new album 'The Ridge'. This unique performance is a powerful sonic experience in which Neufeld’s ethereal vocals meld seamlessly with her mesmerizing violin riffs along with drummer Stefan Schneider. Wrapping up this summer series, Nir Felder, deemed “the next big jazz guitarist” by NPR, and hailed by the New York Times as a “whiz kid”, performs a set of his memorable instrumental compositions, which take his trio into a comforting yet cerebral realm.
On Friday July 22nd, from 10:30-11:30 am, Soundwaves curator & musician Taylor Haskins will present a free workshop called Soundwaves Kids! Haskins will introduce children to the concept, meaning, and nature of actual sound waves. This free workshop will take place on the trail at Black Kettle Farm in Essex where we will explore the reflections, refractions, and resonance of sound waves in a natural environment. Taylor will use native American wooden flutes and other instruments to demonstrate the behavior of sound in the open air along different sections of the trail, and we will also explore exercises in deep listening in order to cultivate a heightened awareness of the world of sound and the sound of the world around us. Preregistration is required, as space is limited. A parent/guardian must accompany your child. To sign up, please email Soundwaves at firstname.lastname@example.org. Suggested donation $5.
