Westport on Lake Champlain, N.Y. - Soundwaves is pleased to present the 2015 summer concert series at Ballard Park in Westport, NY on beautiful Lake Champlain. The 2015 summer series begins July 2 at 7:30 p.m. and continues every Thursday night through August 13 on the hillside amphitheater overlooking Lake Champlain known as the Ballard Park Performance Pavilion. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket and/or lawn chairs and a picnic. The rain site is across Main Street/Route 22 in the warm acoustics of the historic chapel of the Westport Heritage House.
Soundwaves was founded by North Country resident and veteran Jazz trumpeter Taylor Haskins and his wife Catherine in 2014 when they accepted the role as volunteer organizers of the Westport Community Concert Series.
Taylor & Catherine Haskins were motivated by an awareness that music can be a tool to revitalize their local economy. ”Anything that brings a community together can be a catalyst for positive change, including a community park, a visitor center, a public lakeside beach, a CSA-based farm, a local trail system, even a summer concert series,” said Taylor. As the bustle of summer begins, Soundwaves hopes to bring new life to the area by bringing people together through music.
In his 20+ year career as a working musician, Haskins has performed in over 40 countries and over 375 cities at countless concert venues and music festivals of all kinds. Haskins has recorded 5 albums as a leader and played on dozens of recordings. A singular trumpet voice, Taylor is also the lead trumpeter for Dave Holland’s Big Band and a long time member of Guillermo Klein’s Los Guachos. These experiences have given Taylor a broad perspective on what makes a successful music program.
This summer Taylor has curated a program of 7 performances by internationally renowned artists that is musically on par with the best summer festivals. Despite Taylor's jazz background, this summer he will bring to the stage diverse styles and instrumentation. He says, "There are simply very few concert settings as beautiful as the pavilion at Ballard Park. Having performed on hundreds of stages around the world myself, I know that any musician will feel inspired to play here. The audience benefits in turn from a musician performing in a setting like this.”
Having been denied the support of State Arts funding, this year Soundwaves will be 100% community funded. While the concerts will remain free of charge, as they have been since their inception, the truth is that producing high-quality concerts is not free. This summer Taylor will be opening his studio doors to inaugurate 3 Songs, a new membership program. 3 Songs members will enjoy an intimate experience with 4 of the visiting artists the morning after their free concert. An interview by Taylor and the performance of three songs will be live webcast on North Country Public Radio for all to enjoy! In addition, Taylor & Catherine have been reaching out to local businesses as well as individual community members to support the series, and as always, audience members will have the opportunity to make donations at the concerts.
On Friday July 24th, from 10:30-11:30 am, Soundwaves curator & musician Taylor Haskins will present a free workshop called Soundwaves Kids! Haskins will introduce children to the concept, meaning, and nature of actual sound waves. Through interactive demonstrations using musical instruments in addition to listening games and challenges, participants will discover how sound travels through the air and affects not only our ears, but our minds and hearts as well. This free workshop will take place at Taylor’s studio in Westport. Preregistration is required, as space is limited. A parent/guardian must accompany your child. To sign up, please email Soundwaves at firstname.lastname@example.org. Suggested donation $5.
