Second Annual Grand Hike Connects Lake Champlain Communities on May 9

Westport, N.Y. - Champlain Area Trails (CATS) and friends invite all to participate in a full day celebration of community-connecting activities at the second Grand Hike on Saturday, May 9, 2015.

The Grand Hike is an “Inn to Inn” walk in the spirit of self-guided inn to inn walks made popular in Europe. Hikers will depart from the Westport Hotel in Westport, N.Y., traversing along a mix of Champlain Area Trails and connecting roadways to the finish at the Essex Inn in Essex, N.Y. This year’s route provides the option of taking a side trip on the CATS Field and Forest Trail or to Wadhams.

The complete journey totals 14 miles, but participants will be able to select from several shorter distances. The hike is divided into 5 segments, with four “oases” along the trail from which hikers can start or finish. Each oasis will provide port-o-potties, snacks and water to refill water bottles. Complimentary shuttles will be available to and from the Westport Hotel, the Essex Inn and the Essex Ferry dock as follows:

  • From Essex Inn to Westport – 5:30 and 7:00 p.m.

Hikers are asked to please arrange for their own transportation if hiking with a dog, or if starting/ending at oases in between.

Whatever route chosen and wherever the starting point, hikers should plan to arrive in Essex between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. for the Block Party where all are welcome to enjoy music, restorative yoga, massage, tasty food and well-deserved drinks.

“We’re looking forward to another super springtime ramble that links communities and connects people with nature and each other,” said Chris Maron, CATS executive director. “See you on the trails!”
