Westport, N.Y. - Soundwaves, a free summer concert series in Ballard Park in Westport, N.Y. begins July 3 at 7:30 p.m. with Grammy award-winning trumpeter and series organizer Taylor Haskins.
At the inaugural series event, Haskins will be performing music from his critically acclaimed album Fuzzy Logic (released 2014 on Sunnyside Records). Supporting Haskins will be NYC legendary jazz guitarist Ben Monder and a string orchestra of 15 students from the Meadowmount School of Music. The band will also include Vermont musicians Robinson Morse on bass and Geza Carr on drums. Haskins promises a magically sonic evening to kickstart your July 4th holiday weekend.
This is Haskins' first summer as curator & organizer of the 19th annual Westport Community Concert Series at Ballard Park. Despite Taylor's jazz background, this summer he will bring to the stage diverse variations on world music, folk, bluegrass, classical, as well as jazz.
"There are simply very few concert settings as beautiful as the pavilion at Ballard Park. Having performed on hundreds of stages around the world myself, I know that any musician will feel inspired to play here,” said Haskins.
Taylor's motivation to helm the series stems from an awareness that music can be a tool to revitalize our local economy. "Anything that brings a community together can be a catalyst for positive change, including a park, a visitor center, a lakeside beach, a local trail system, even a summer concert series."
This summer Taylor has curated a program of 8 performances by internationally renowned artists that is musically on par with the best summer festivals.
The 2014 summer series begins July 3rd at 7:30 and continues every Thursday night through August 27th on the hillside amphitheatre overlooking Lake Champlain known as the Ballard Park Performance Pavilion.
All are encouraged to bring a blanket/lawn chairs and a picnic. The rain site is across Main Street/Route 22 in the acoustically amazing historic chapel of the Westport Heritage House.
