Birthplace of the American Experience

Statue of Samuel de Champlain

For 10,000 years, Native Americans hunted, fished and traded in this region. Samuel de Champlain was the first European to explore the lake in 1609. Trappers and traders traveled the length of Lake Champlain between Albany and Montreal.

A Colony Becomes a Nation
During the mid-18th century, the Lake Champlain Valley became center stage as the European superpowers, Britain and France, fought for control of the strategic water highway during the French & Indian War. A generation later, the new American republic was forged and defended here during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. After the American Revolution, families cleared the land for farms while lakeshore communities thrived as centers for shipbuilding and transportation.
